MY FAVE WEAVER

I consider one of my most favorite artists to be the best – THE best – artist of all time.

He’s a fabulous weaver. Not just any row-upon-row weaver, but magic images weaver, wizard-like design weaver, iconic story-teller weaver.

His name is Maximo Laura. If you have ever seen any of his weavings, you’ll know exactly why I say he’s The Best.

This is what I wrote to his gallery – because someone like Laura should know how much he and his work is appreciated:

I consider Maximo Laura to be the best artist of all media.

One can argue, but where else would you find such incredible color use, such amazing texture play, such outstanding, thrillingly unconventional use of the medium, such intricate yet bold and finely-tuned design?

Not to mention how beautifully he tells the stories of his people and their relationship to the earth, sky and waters, and to each other, the music, the environment and spiritual world!

I have spent hours admiring and poring over his designs and works, and even after years of seeing them, I still get tears in my heart for the beauty he creates. He’s more than a Master – he’s a Wonder.

And what I like best? Is that he isn’t a proud, snooty look-at-me-how-great-I-am guy – he’s kind, and humble, and joyous. I love that.

I’ve been a professional artist since 1965, and have seen and encountered the works of thousands of artists.
There is NO one who can compare, or even come close.

I only wish I lived closer, so I could come by and visit and soak in the beauty in person.
