Swallowing pills makes me gag. Here’s how I fixed that.
Taking pills is one of my least favorite thing, ever. They catch in my throat and choke me. Hate it. I’ve tried everything. Here’s what works.
I take a few critical vitamins in capsule form. I can’t handle more than 4 or 5 at once. So I’m always on the lookout for slippery liquids to wash the sticky things down with.
At first I used V8 – but then the flavor changed and it doesn’t taste as good anymore. Plain tomato juice works, but it’s so blah! My body has a bad reaction to the tomatoes anyway – my hands get all swollen. So I avoid the gagging but end up with arthritic hands. I’ll pass on that.
I’ve tried all kinds of teas, coffees, coconut water, and fruit juices. I like coconut water but it’s absurdly expensive. The fruit juices spike insulin levels, even the supposed organic sugar and fructose-free ones.
Recently I found a really nice prune juice! Sunsweet produces these 4-paks of little cans of prune juice – it’s medium thick, sweet and smooth, and really helps lubricate the throat. Since I only take a couple sips and save the rest in a jar for the next time, it doesn’t spike my insulin levels. And obviously I don’t overindulge to avoid what prune juice does to one’s digestion . . .
BEFORE I start taking the pills, I get a cup of hot tea or coffee ready. Not too hot – just right – because if something gets caught in my throat, a swallow of the warm drink softens and dislodges the pill and helps me swallow it.
Now I put the pill in my mouth, swish a bit of juice to lube the pill, then sip enough juice to wash the pill down. This works.
Annnnd – for a longer explanation of how to put the pill in just the right place in order to swallow it easily – here is a link – go to the page and look for the ebook called How to Swallow Pills without Gagging. It’s free, no strings.
