I love this time of year! So much lovely fresh produce! If only I had room for a garden, I’d grow enough for my whole neighborhood. Really – would that be cool, or what?
I could put up a little stand at the end of my driveway (assuming I had one) and stack it with every last thing out of my beautiful garden. Tomatoes – several varieties, natch – and carrots and zukes and peas and peppers of all kinds, and . . . well, you get the idea.
Living in a small house with no yard, sadly, is not conducive to that kind of activity. However, I just planted arugula seeds in a little container for my kitchen windowsill – for the new leaves, to be cut as they grow.
And just for fun, about a month ago I cut off 5 ginger eyes and stuck them in some soil in another small pot. They grew! They are about an inch tall already! Tonight I transferred them to slightly bigger pots, which now sit on a stand-thing right near my eating table, so I can talk with them easily.
Ginger grows as tall as me, so eventually I’ll have to pony up for bigger pots, and where I’ll put them is anybody’s guess. But in the kind-time, I get to sing I-Looooove-Yooo to them every time I walk into my kitchen. That makes me very happy.
Oh and at the same time that I planted the ginger, I cut up a yam and stuck the pieces in a jar of water. They grew fantastic roots, so I put those into dirt in a pot near my table.
The vines are already about 3 feet long, and draping themselves so gracefully over the side of the stand. They will get very long, so I’ll have to loop them up and around themselves. Yams make the prettiest heart-shaped leaves –
And once more … where will it end up? I may have to get a better stand. Maybe one with tiers.
Do you have plants? What kind? Where do you keep them? Tell me!!! Don’t you just love them? Do you talk to them?
This is the gold-on-green repeat x 9 version:
Wouldn’t this one look great as wallpaper in a fresh-foody kind of restaurant?
