I had a doctor friend who was known for his sunny disposition, always cheering people up. He was amazing – he could make even the most impossibly depressed people laugh until tears ran down their cheeks.
On the darkest days ever, being with him felt like being inside one of those enormous lamps they used to use in lighthouses. Every cell of your body had only one choice – they had to light up. Period. And after he left, they’d stay lit.
And he had the coolest dachshund who accompanied him everywhere, even in the hospital. Named, of course, Doc Sun. Everyone just pretended he wasn’t there.
No one knew my friend had leukemia, until he was suddenly gone.
This is in honor of guys like him. Brave, silly, soul-deep committed to helping those in need, and cheery in the face of the absolute worst.
