A couple days ago there was a story posted on facebook about a 4 year-old deaf boy who thought it would be a good idea to traipse on outdoors while his mom took a shower.

On a freezing cold day.

With only a t-shirt, sweat pants and sneakers on.

He never came back that afternoon. Everyone thought he went into the nearby forest, so they scrambled a team and spent hours searching, to no avail.

He was profoundly deaf, so calling his name had zero effect.

The officials abandoned the search ‘due to extreme conditions’ at 2 a.m.

His mom never left the edge of the forest all the rest of the night.

The boy was finally found almost 2 miles away, at around 6:30 a.m. the next day, hunkered down in the hollow under a tree formed by its roots.

The family cat had found him, and draped itself around the boy’s neck and shoulders. It was so cold it had frostbite on its ear tips, and legs so stiff with cold they had to take their time carefully getting it off the boy.

The boy was blue with cold, but unharmed – a couple fingertips frosty, but OK.

Both of them were taken to hospitals, and both were actually OK, despite the severity of the conditions.

Having spent two years in the late 80s living in my truck and camping out, myself – through blistering hot summers and ice-cold, snowy winters – I am kind of stunned that a bare-chested boy, sitting on the cold ground, with only his kitty to keep him warm, got though even one night out in the freezing cold like that.

He was truly blessed to have such a sweet friend come to save him!
