I’m so lucky! My neighbor has a huge camellia tree right next to the fence right outside my window.
Entwined within many of its branches are those of a large red bud tree, most of its limbs reaching for the light over to my right, straining to get out from the camellia’s embrace.
So I get lovely white blooms against the deep dark leaves for a month, and then suddenly little red dots appear on the outer branches of the red bud.
They look like splatters of crimson and carmine, bursting into little firecrackly blooms – now covered with three kinds of bees!
I was surprised by one of the kinds – it’s big and fat and clumsy like a bumble bee, but no stripes, and the wings look like wasp wings, instead of bee wings.
I have no clue what they are, just that they are very polite, hovering and waiting for the other bees to take their fill before unceremoniously plopping themselves right into the hearts of the red buds. Which are now almost done.
Today I noticed little tiny green leaf shoots at the ends of the branches. I’ll be curious to see if the leaves climb out of where the red buds were and dropped off, or in between.
The lily of the valley in the design are fantasy – they don’t grow here – but I can imagine they do, right?
Spring is my favorite time of year. Everything gets refreshed. Colors and new leaves and sweet tender branches – so crispy and bright. I love it.
