| Our guide
said that this was called a "cenote" - it's one of
the natural holes running through the limestone, some of which
could be hundreds of feet deep and go straight down. They used
these holes to sacrifice ceremonial victims - apparently everyone
thought they'd go straight to heaven so they were thought to
have gone to their watery deaths quite happy - Uh huh! This one
was not a sacrifical hole, but more of a drain hole. Better not
come weaving home drunk through this path! |
